Wayne Merrick


Prior to Joining BYG Advantage, Wayne was co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Advantage, which was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2000. Wayne then became the Regional Managing Director for Juniper APAC Region after the acquisition. As the Regional MD, Wayne formulated and executed sales strategy and tactics as well as developed strong relationships with key partners throughout the region driving upwards of $150Mil in sales in the first two years.

Asia Pacific has become the fastest growing region for Juniper worldwide then and remains a significant region for Juniper today. Wayne left Juniper to start Pacific Advantage (International) Ltd., the current ("PAL") company, resuming what he had been doing before his company was acquired by Juniper. PAL has collectively helped over 100 technology companies to establish operations in the Asia Pacific region.

Prior to PAL, Wayne was the Business Development Director for I.T.S., the services and integration arm of SITA (the worldwide Airline Telecom Network). He came to the Asia region in 1987 as the Marketing Manager for Wang Labs after 5 years in the USA as Sales Manager for them in San Francisco. He is a native of San Francisco and holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Montana.

Hali Tsang


Hali is now the operations manager at BYG Advantage. Prior to this she was a co-founder and Chief Operating Officer at PAL where she oversaw the operations such as Finance, Marketing, Administration and Human Resource. She helped to set up the company's regional offices and legal entities.

Hali was instrumental in the success of PAL which was acquired by Juniper Networks. After the acquisition, she was the Operations Manager for Juniper Network in Asia Pacific, and helped to set up Juniper Asia Pacific infrastructure in Hong Kong, China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and India. She grew the Juniper Network Asia Pacific team from 16 to 92 people in less than 2 years. After setting up various Juniper Asia entities and departments such as Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Administration in various Asia offices, she focused in streamlining the Sales Operations processes and providing more support to the Asia Pacific Sales team. She has been actively involved in sales situations and was instrumental in closing some of the multi-million dollar deals in the region.

Prior to PAL and Juniper, Hali has worked at Wang for 9 years in various roles in Marketing, Sales and Sales Management. She led a sales team of sales and pre-sales and had won many Sales Achiever Awards in Wang. Hali earned her degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science in York University, Toronto, Canada.

Greg Shea


Greg Shea is a leader in the high-tech business community in Greater China/Asia Pacific, and more recently in African emerging markets. Greg has held several senior roles including President of BlackBerry China and President of the US Information Technology Office (USITO). 

Greg began his career in Asia floowing completion of his MSc in 1987 with the Canadian Foreign Service, working Seoul and then Hong Kong.  In 1997 Greg joined HP as China Director Communications and Government Affairs. 

In 2000 Greg joined a Siemens CITIC joint venture in charge of new venture investment, working with startups in e-Learning, e- commerce, and mobile data software and terminals. From the Spring of 2004 Greg served as Sun Microsytem's North Asia Government Industry Director until becoming President of USITO in the Fall of 2005. Greg joined BlackBerry in 2008, initially as VP for Government Relations Asia and then from 2009 to 2012 as President of BlackBerry China.

Greg has served as Chair of the E-Commerce China Forum under the Ministry of Commerce, as expert team leader for the EU China Information Society Project, and as a member of US Government Affairs committee of the American Chamber in Beijing. Since 2014, Greg has been advising African and Chinese governments and businesses on Africa focused ICT projects and development strategies. Greg became a partner in Yang Brothers in 2016. Greg resides between Hong Kong, Beijing and Nairobi. 

John Fargis


John Fargis is a senior executive with over twenty-five years of general management experience in the China market. He has run Asia for a range of US and European software companies 

Three of these companies have been purchased by Google. He is currently Co-founder and Principal for BYG Advantage, focused market acceleration with international technology firms across APAC. He is also an adjunct professor at the Hult International Business School Shanghai campus where he teaches courses on Emerging Markets, Leadership and Chinese History.  John also serves as an executive education practitioner with many Chinese and international businesses. 

John's management experience in Asia includes work with dozens of software and hardware platforms including telecoms infrastructure, speech processing, video codecs, video conferencing, embedded touch technology, geo-location technology, open source data architecture, shared-economy, dev ops, ed-tech, gaming and IT systems management software. He has incorporated and managed businesses, in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, Australia and specializes in managing international teams interdependently. He is currently the director and board member of numerous regional technology companies and is a regional advisor for Media Bridge Capital. 

John first came to China as a Henry Luce Scholar in 1993 when he worked in Shanghai. He was the first foreigner in the modern era, allowed permission to work in a Chinese reform school. Prior to this assignment he had worked for four years as a New York City, special education schoolteacher in Brownsville, Brooklyn. He blogs daily about regional politics, the arts, and life in an emerging China on DustyBrine

John has a B.A. with Honors in Medieval Studies from Wesleyan University, a Masters of Special Education from Hunter College and a Masters in International Relations with a focus on international business from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and Harvard University. He is a GBN-trained scenario practitioner and a graduate of the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School. John lives in Beijing with his wife and two daughters.

Martin Ashby


Martin is a results focused executive with nearly 30 years’ experience in business delivery, analytics, sales and partner enablement. He has lived and worked for extended periods in both the Asia and European continents successfully introducing and expanding both sales and operations of numerous IT product and service organizations.

In 2004, from Singapore, Martin founded the Asia operations of IT Managed Services company, Kaseya, successfully growing revenues to nearly one-quarter of global results building an extensive team and deep customer base spanning all APAC, from Australia / New Zealand, to India, China, Korea and Japan. These results contributed to the company’s successful private equity buy-out in 2013.

More recently Martin led the south-Asian expansion of Big Data software company, Hortonworks, establishing first customers in Australia, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. Martin also personally led the company’s first consecutive million-dollar quarterly sales results for Asia-Pacific. These results were contributing factors in the company’s successful IPO in 2014.

Martin continues to use his acute cultural, social and business awareness to cultivate new relationships with customers and business partners across almost all industries. His skills were founded from a Bachelor of Economics Degree majoring in Accounting and Computer Science from Macquarie University, and his initial business skills were cultivated with top-tier Chartered Accounting firm, KPMG.

Today, Martin continues to maintain a hands-on tactical solution sales approach for his clients’ strategic success.

Julian Gordon


Julian is a senior executive with an excellent track record managing and developing business in Asia Pacific with leading technology companies including HP, Cisco, Sun Microsystems and Juniper Networks. 

Julian is solution-driven with a strong management, business development, sales, marketing and corporate strategic development background. He possesses excellent leadership skills and in–depth business knowledge, with specific expertise in fintech, enterprise blockchain technologies, big data, cyber security and open source software development. He is an advocate for open source and the truly transformational potential of blockchain. 

Prior to working with BYG, Julian was Director of Business Development for HP Enterprise Services Asia, responsible for growth across Greater China, Southeast Asia and Korea. Julian built Cisco Systems’ first dedicated cross-industry marketing team, as head of Enterprise Marketing Asia Pacific (AP). He also held key roles at Juniper Networks as Vice President, Enterprise Sales, AP and at Sun Microsystems as Director for Industry Sales and Director for Financial Services Industry in AP. Julian began his technology career in London, working with financial institutions including HSBC, Kleinwort Benson and Lloyds Bank.

His experience spans developing and managing business development, sales and marketing teams with US$100 million+ targets focused on major industry sectors.

Born in Hong Kong, educated in the United Kingdom, Julian holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Systems Analysis from the University of the West of England at Bristol.

Brian Burns


Brian has over thirty years’ experience and extensive relationships in Japan, China and other Asia, Brian has led market entry, sales and marketing, and strategic fundraising for North American high-tech companies seeking to accelerate their growth in the region. 

Brian built sales organizations and opened business operations in leadership roles with companies like Hashicorp, Hortonworks, ViXS, Cybersource (VISA), Microsoft, and Apple Computer. His industry domains include enterprise software, consumer electronics, electronic payments and IoT. He maintains relationships with executive and senior management at major internet companies, retailers, mobile carriers, financial institutions and automotive manufacturers in China, Japan, other Asia, Europe and United States.

Brian graduated with honors from University of California, Berkeley with majors in Engineering and Asian Languages, attended Keio University in Tokyo, and earned his MBA from Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

Brian brings the unique ability to understand nuanced situations from business , cultural and historical perspectives. He is fluent in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, speaking, negotiating), and is a frequent public speaker at international business and technology events. He is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, and lives in Tokyo.

CoCo Lui


CoCo is the BYG Advantage Finance and Accounting manager for the last 3 years. Previously, she was in the same finance position with PAL for 20 years. She is a native of Hong Kong and expert in the field of finance and accounting and as well as the complexities of doing business in China.
